Arcane
Arcane is an animated series based on the popular video game League of Legends. I was initially drawn to the show because of its stunning visuals and incredible soundtracks. This show has a very sharp, steampunk art style. I was instantly attracted by the characters' outfits, which fit their respective wearers perfectly. The show also depicted its two starkly contrasting settings very well. The show has the bright, futuristic look of the utopian Piltover, with the characters dressed to indicate their high status. On the other hand, we see the dark slums of the Underground City, Zaun, and its impoverished citizens.
My admiration quickly spread to the show's well-developed characters. Arcane focuses on its characters rather than following a sequential plot in which a character's actions are determined by simply sticking to a script. Each character's decisions and actions appear genuine when considering their past and current environment. As a result, there is no clear protagonist or antagonist, but rather people who act in ways that correspond to their circumstances, making them easy to sympathize with.
The show was genuinely an emotional rollercoaster for me and a very eye-opening experience. In just nine episodes, the show beautifully depicted how sisters can become strangers and desperate strangers can become the closest friends, how a cruel ruler could just be looking out for his oppressed nation, and so much more!
Ready or Not
I had no idea what to expect when I first came across Ready or Not during summer vacation, but as a fan of horror and thrillers, I decided to give it a shot. Surprisingly, it was a great mix of horror and comedy.
I really liked how unique the whole premise was. The movie revolves around a bride hunted by her husband's affluent family as part of a wedding night ritual. She is taken there with the promise of playing a game as part of the family custom, but she soon discovers that the family only keeps this tradition to ensure their prosperity as a bargain with the devil. She is forced to play hide and seek, with the caveat that if she is discovered, she will be killed. Now, how insane of a plot is that!
I found myself constantly at the edge of my seat throughout the movie, rooting for our main character, Grace, as she fights for her life. She had some hilarious lines despite the tense situation she was put through, which made her strong-willed and sarcastic characters even more likable. While I enjoyed the film, I would like to raise a disclaimer because it is extremely violent and may not be suitable for many people.
SPY X FAMILY
Perhaps you'd like to unwind with something wholesome and comical? Check out this hilarious, twelve episodes long animation series on three strangers who become a family due to their circumstances.
Despite having a more political theme, this show emphasizes family. This show introduced me to three lovable characters of the Forger family: the charismatic undercover spy Loid (Agent Twilight), the hardworking assassin Yor (Thorn Princess), and the adorable telepath Anya.
The show depicts an intriguing family dynamic in which the three characters attempt to conceal their secret identities from one another while convincing everyone that they are a legitimate family. The interaction between this pretend family was endearing to me because they are all aware that they may not be together forever. Nonetheless, the bond they form throughout the series is similar to that of a real family.
I believe Anya is the best aspect of the whole show. Anya's presence in the show is quite ironic as her parents conceal their identity while she is already aware of it. She happens to become the glue that holds this family together. Her telepathic ability also allows for some amusing moments between her and the other characters.
